Start of art exhibition “Holobiont. Life is Other“

Outreach

An art exhibition involving David Berry is on display at the Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab (AIT, Georg-Coch-Platz 2, 1010 Vienna). Under the title “Holobiont. Life is Other”, the curators of the exhibition, Judith Reichart, Lucie Strecker, Thomas Feuerstein, Jens Hauser and the AIT, bring together contributions that deal with the interconnectedness of humans with their surroundings and other organisms. The exhibition has opened to interested visitors last week. David Berry, human microbiome researcher at CMESS, contributed to the design of the installation and supported it with technical consulting. Also, a published work he co-wrote based on a prior exhibition will be on display.

The exhibition builds on the concept of the “holobiont”, which was introduced by biologist Lynn Margulis in 1991. The term “holobiont” refers to the permeation of humans by the biosphere. In this sense, with the exhibition “Holobiont. Life is Other”the Applied Interdisciplinary Lab presents bodies, environments, texts, media, machines and biological organisms condensed into pictorial spaces – each of which represents a narrative about another life and about the lives of others.

The exhibition is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 1 to 6 pm and on Thursdays from 1 to 8 pm until 20 January. On that day there will be a finissage with book presentation at 7 pm.
